The Learned Ladies
In “Learned Ladies” by Molière, translated by Richard Wilbur, two young people are in love, but to marry they must overcome an obstacle: the attitude of her family. Her sensible father and uncle are in favor of the marriage, but her father is under the thumb of his wife, who is supported by an aunt and sister who want her to marry a "scholar" and mediocre poet with lofty aspirations who has these three women completely in his thrall. For these three ladies are "learned." Their obsession in life is learning and culture of the most pretentious kind.
